Memories

  • First and foremost, all the wonderful quality time with Mimi and Skip! Mimi has been like a second mom to me my entire life and I adored spending so much time getting to catch up and see their world.
  • Skip taught my dad and I to fly fish. I caught a big fat zero, but had a pretty fun time sipping beers and perfecting my casting technique.
  • Drinks and dinner at The Depot. Oh man, I’m salivating now thinking of the wings. These people know their meat.
  • People watching at The Peppermill Casino and winning $40 on the slot machines. I was a happy idiot, as you can tell in the photo a few spaces down.
  • Drinking delicious port and wine we picked up in Napa and Sonoma and laughing about all their Reno adventures (think 3 foot owls and nosy bears) and our Miami memories.
  • Playing Sequence. I’m addicted to this board game now! Now, to find someone else who likes board games…
  • Visiting Mimi’s church with her.
  • Trying to go for a run at altitude after a week at the beach and it quickly turning into a big fat Nope!
  • The landscape and vegetation in general. There is something uniquely beautiful about sweeping views of thick brush and red hills.
  • Falling asleep to the cool wind and bright moon every night.
  • The sound this one type of tree makes in the wind. It sounds like rustling sequins.

Keep adventuring,

xoxo Alina

The Great American Road Trip: Grand Tetons – Memories & Snapshots

Memories

  • Campfire chats: We laugh with our neighbors, Tom and Hayden about how the relationship between bears and humans is very one-sided. I mean I don’t hear them clapping and making noise to alert us to their presence. And can’t they evolve to distinguish between food smells and toiletries? That would be very helpful thanks. Please discuss at your next Grizzly council meeting.
  • Sitting at camp with my book and Moose Drool beer and it dawning on me that it’s a Wednesday and all I have to do is whatever I want to do. How crazy cool and fortunate I am!
  • Huckleberry Hot Springs will forever be the hike of 4 river crossings and 4 snakes. This little hike starts by our campground and leads to Huckleberry Hot Springs and Polecat Hot Springs. It seemed like the perfect little adventure on a cool gloomy day, but we quickly realized it’s very hard to relax in grizzly country when you have to constantly scan for bears and make your presence known. We laughed so hard that we felt like dumplings in broth – the perfect grizzly lunch! Then two snakes thought they’d join us in the soup and we called it quits. Back to camp to read our books and chat with our neighbors.
  • Dinner and drinks with Rick and Leslie. They are from Arizona and are on the road for a couple months with their Chihuahuas, Marlon and Stella :) They told us stories of Sturgis and showed us their Harleys and guns and cooked us up a meal of venison Rick hunted. This is the beauty of travel: meeting people (wonderful, generous, hospitable people) from all walks of life, but you’re all bonded in the love and pursuit of travel.
  • Showering one night and seeing the bathroom filled with teenage girls, getting decked out, curling their hair and doing their makeup for a night around the campfire. It looked like a scene out of a pageant show dressing room and it made us chuckle.

MEMORIES & SNAPSHOTS

  • Singing “Hey Bear, Go away Bear. I don’t want to see you on the trail Bear” to the tune of Billy Currington’s “Hey Girl.”
  • Stacy Gonzalez, the bunny who hung out at camp and almost jumped in the fire.
  • Reality of travel: With a chest full of congestion and a fatigued body, I had to make a pit stop at a Deadwood clinic and got a Z pack. On the bright side, we find my old hag, chain-smoking, wheezy cough pretty hilarious. It sends us into fits of laughter :)
  • I had high hopes for Deadwood. I had seen it on the Bachelor (guilty!) and loved its wild west charm. The city in the hills has a gritty and intriguing past of cowboys and outlaws. I am sorry to say that I was a little disappointed. While Deadwood met my expectations visually, there wasn’t much else there besides casinos and bars. Nothing wrong with that, but I’m not the type to stay in a bar all day and I don’t exactly have money to gamble (I quit my job for this road trip remember?). We walked around and grabbed a quick bite before heading back to our camp ground and Hill City.
  • Giggle fits and getting wedged in the spelunking test tunnel at the Jewel Caves National Monument. The caves are beautiful and the third longest in the world. Go!
