Memories

  • First and foremost, all the wonderful quality time with Mimi and Skip! Mimi has been like a second mom to me my entire life and I adored spending so much time getting to catch up and see their world.
  • Skip taught my dad and I to fly fish. I caught a big fat zero, but had a pretty fun time sipping beers and perfecting my casting technique.
  • Drinks and dinner at The Depot. Oh man, I’m salivating now thinking of the wings. These people know their meat.
  • People watching at The Peppermill Casino and winning $40 on the slot machines. I was a happy idiot, as you can tell in the photo a few spaces down.
  • Drinking delicious port and wine we picked up in Napa and Sonoma and laughing about all their Reno adventures (think 3 foot owls and nosy bears) and our Miami memories.
  • Playing Sequence. I’m addicted to this board game now! Now, to find someone else who likes board games…
  • Visiting Mimi’s church with her.
  • Trying to go for a run at altitude after a week at the beach and it quickly turning into a big fat Nope!
  • The landscape and vegetation in general. There is something uniquely beautiful about sweeping views of thick brush and red hills.
  • Falling asleep to the cool wind and bright moon every night.
  • The sound this one type of tree makes in the wind. It sounds like rustling sequins.

Keep adventuring,

xoxo Alina

The Great American Road Trip: Virginia City, NV

Tahoe 46

Tahoe 27

This postage stamp sized town packs a punch! The first afternoon we were here, we watched David John and the Comstock Cowboys  at the Bucket of Blood Saloon. Virginia City denizens have so much pride for the history of their town and their ancestors and they dress up in period clothing to keep the spirit alive. Everyone in the bar was packing, with three guns minimum, and I turned to my cousin Miriam and asked about their costumes. She laughed and assured me that those are all real guns and that Nevada is a true cowboy state. My eyes got really big as I scanned the room and did a quick count of the guns present. It’s not something I’m used to seeing, but it made me happy to see the American wild west spirit alive and well.

A 35 minute drive from Reno and at 6,150 feet, Virginia City transports you back in time to the Comstock Lode heyday, when it was a thriving metropolis of 25,000 residents and a booming mine town at the center of American commerce. Keep your eyes peeled for the wild horses that call this town and the surrounding hills home.

“Once a vital settlement between Denver and San Francisco, Virginia City influenced the entire country. During its boomtime, Virginia City’s mining proceeds amounted to millions of dollars, equaling billions today. Every inch of this picturesque, Victorian-era town, celebrates this colorful history. Stroll our authentic board sidewalks to Old West saloons, shops, museums, and restaurants. Or visit historic churches, 19th century homes, public buildings, and quaint cemeteries. Maybe it’s a ride on a stagecoach, horse-drawn carriage, trolley, or the V&T Railroad steam engine train that crosses the high desert landscape dotted with old mines. Take your step back in time in Virginia City!”

Keep adventuring,

xoxo Alina

Shopping

Made: Kitschy Jackson themed house wares and jewelry.

Bootlegger: Cowboy boot heaven.

Terra: Contemporary clothing with brands like Tibi, Calypso, Milly, Splendid, and Theory.

Altitude: This store nails the upscale laid back vibe with lust-worthy denim and flowy bohemian tops, dresses and tees. They also stock apothecary goods, ceramic, pillows and home baubles. Think Frye, Hudson, J Brand, Free people, and Wildfox.

Lees Tees: All the souvenir tees and hats you could ever want.

Habits: Womens boutique with European inspired pieces, edgy hardware jewelry and sleek sneakers.

Jackson Hole Buffalo Meat Co.: Gourmet buffalo meat and jerky shop. I’m obsessed with buffalo jerky. In fact, my favorite road snacks are jerky, sour gummies and Dr. Pepper.

Vom Fass: Oils, vinegars, and spirits line the walls here. You can taste test them all and when you make your decisions, you pick a bottle and fill it. I picked up some vinegars for my mom.

Jackson Mercantile: Souvenirs galore and wacky stuffed animal scenes.

Jackson Hole Pendleton: Indian wool blankets.

Hideout Leather: Gorgeous leather pieces with that quintessential wild west style.

Eating

Moos: Delicious and creamy ice cream with more flavors than I could try…but I definitely did try :)

Lotus Cafe: Organic fresh yumminess! I had some kombucha and a macro bowl. Such a welcome change from campfire beans, corn and rice.

Hatch Taqueria and Tequila: No explanation needed.

Wild Sage: Award winning upscale American eatery at the Rusty Parrot Hotel.

Bin 22: Italian wine and charcuterie bar.

Persephone Bakery: Flaky baked goods and smooth rich coffee. A must!

Cafe Genevieve: Our first meal in Jackson and I was hooked. Cheesy Eggs and Chiles.

Liberty Burger: Fresh and local gourmet burgers as big as your burger shaped eyes! We ate here after our full day hike and it really hit the spot.

Nightlife

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar: This place is an institution. I laughed so hard sitting in the saddles.

The Rose: This place would fit right into the lower east side of NYC. Delicious cocktails and wine.

Snake River Brewing: Local beer and relaxed vibe.

Jackson Hole Live: Outdoor concerts at the base of Snow King Mountain.

Keep adventuring,

xoxo Alina

Statement Tiles in the Home

Tiled 5

Tiled 19

Oh hello old world charm! I can’t get enough of tiles these days. I’m especially drawn to the blues and greens and the crispness of the black and white ones. And how beautiful is the incorporation of the tiled and wooded floor?! Cuban, Turkish, Portuguese, Moroccan, Italian, Greek… There’s something so flirty and playful about them, that I can’t help but smile. How I love the old kitchens and bathrooms and courtyards you encounter when you’re traveling. So colorful and ornate, they tell stories of residents past and the old world. Oh that ever romanticized old world. I picture families spending all day in the kitchen preparing a glorious meal, or the soft trickle of water as someone unwinds in a hot and soapy tub, or the gentle breeze and amber sun filling a courtyard as someone sips their cortadito. I hope to incorporate them in a big way into my home one day. Would you?
